Gemini's picture lessons you tap through, explained by monkey

comment: LIGHTNING

Gemini now has a little library of picture lessons called immersive explorations. You pick a topic, tap a label, and it zooms one layer deeper, from the big picture all the way down to atoms. It works with a normal free Google account. Here's where to find it, how to use it, and what it can't do yet.

On October 28, Google added immersive explorations to the Gemini app. Google describes it as an interactive, visual way to explore topics layer by layer: you tap a label to dig deeper, going from huge planet-sized views straight down to molecules and atoms. It's available to all users with a personal Google account, on the web and on your phone.

Where to find it

  • Open Gemini and go to the student hub, then tap "Try immersive explorations".
  • Or go straight to the library: gemini.google.com/immersive-explorations
  • You don't need to be a student or pay for anything. A normal Google account works.

How to use it

  • Pick a topic from the library. Google's own examples are the physics of lightning, the inside of a jet engine and the old Silk Road trade routes.
  • Tap any label on the picture to go one layer deeper.
  • Keep tapping to go further down, all the way to the tiny stuff, then back out to the big picture.
  • Use it with a kid: let them do the tapping and you read the labels out loud.

What it can't do yet

  • It's a fixed library of about 20 topics (things like energy, engineering, medicine, geology, oceans and spaceflight). You can't make one about your own topic yet.
  • You can't open them from a normal Gemini chat yet. Google says that, plus spoken narration, is coming soon.
  • It works in English, Indonesian, Hindi, Brazilian Portuguese, French and Simplified Chinese. Other languages get the English version for now.
